The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce commends Premier Danielle Smith for her swift and strategic response to the latest U.S. tariffs. Her leadership not only addresses immediate economic challenges but also strengthens Alberta’s long-term resilience.

In her recent address, Premier Smith outlined several key measures:

  • Prioritizing Local Procurement: Shifting government purchasing toward Alberta and Canadian businesses.
  • Halting Purchases of U.S. Alcohol and VLTs: The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) will suspend imports of U.S. alcohol and new Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs), promoting local alternatives such as B.C. wines and Alberta craft beverages.
  • Enhancing Product Labeling: Ensuring clear identification of Canadian-made products to encourage domestic support.
  • Advocating for Interprovincial Free Trade: Reducing internal trade barriers to foster a stronger national economy.

These initiatives align with the Edmonton Chamber's recent statement on the U.S. tariffs, emphasizing the need to eliminate internal trade barriers, expand into new international markets, and modernize tax and regulatory systems to enhance global competitiveness.

The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce remains committed to collaborating with all orders of government, local businesses, and other stakeholders to navigate these challenging times. We believe that through unity and strategic action, Alberta can turn these challenges into opportunities for economic growth and resilience.
