Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Commends City Council for Approving Public Spaces Bylaw

February 25th, 2025
Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce applauds Edmonton City Council for approving the Public Spaces Bylaw, a pivotal step in modernizing and enhancing the management of our city's public spaces. This decision reflects a balanced and forward-thinking approach to improving public safety, supporting local businesses, and fostering a welcoming environment for all Edmontonians.
“This bylaw brings much-needed clarity and consistency to how Edmonton manages public spaces,” said Doug Griffiths, President & CEO of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. “It balances public safety with economic growth, ensuring our parks, transit areas, and business districts remain accessible and vibrant. We commend City Council for taking decisive action.”
The Chamber has been a strong proponent of this bylaw since its introduction in February 2024, recognizing its significance as one of many policy tools necessary to address public safety challenges in Edmonton’s public spaces.
Key Highlights of the Public Spaces Bylaw:
- Improve public safety by setting clear rules for behaviour in parks, transit areas, and shared spaces.
- Support local businesses by making it easier for food trucks and other businesses to operate without unnecessary restrictions.
- Simplify event permits so businesses and community groups can host events more easily.
- Take a fair approach to enforcement by focusing on education and community engagement instead of just fines and penalties.
The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce remains committed to advocating to the City of Edmonton for policies that promote economic prosperity, public safety, and a high quality of life for all Edmontonians.
