Traditionally, April is the start of the digging season, when homeowners and contractors are rolling up their sleeves to tackle various home and yard improvement projects. Spring projects often involve ground disturbance activities, including landscaping, excavation, and fencing, that can lead to potentially unsafe situations if the important step of “Click or Call Before You Dig" is missed.
Trans Mountain proudly supports April as Dig Safe Month -- a nationwide initiative to raise awareness about safe digging practices that can improve personal safety and prevent damage to underground infrastructure.
Before breaking ground on your project, submit a locate request through clickbeforeyoudig.com. Click or Call Before You Dig is a free service that connects residential, commercial, and industrial ground disturbers, with member utility owners before breaking ground. In Alberta, these requests are submitted through Utility Safety Partners.
When submitting your request, you will need to provide:
- Name, location, and contact information
- Start date of ground disturbance
- Overview and duration of the project
- How deep you’ll be disturbing the ground
If your project is located near the Trans Mountain pipeline, our representative will contact you and provide further information on how to proceed with your project safely.
Safe practices are essential and ensure you and others are free from harm or danger. Think about safety before you start any job and ask yourself “Is this potentially dangerous?” The end goal is to ensure we maintain a safe work environment for coworkers, family, and ourselves. Participate in Dig Safe Month by promoting “Click or Call Before You Dig”, use the free service of Utility Safety Partners and follow #DigSafe and #DigSafeMonth on Twitter.
